How to use it

From script to storyboard in four steps.

01

Break the script into shots

One frame per shot: each time the camera cuts or moves somewhere new. Check the length first with the free script timer.

02

Sketch each frame

Stick figures and boxes are enough. Show who is in the shot, where they stand and what is in the background.

03

Write it underneath

Action: what happens. Dialogue / VO: what is said. Camera: the framing or move — wide, close-up, pan, push in.

04

Number and time the shots

Fill in the shot number and seconds above each frame, so the board adds up to the length of the video.

FAQ

Storyboard template questions.

What is a storyboard template?+

A page of empty frames, one per shot, with room under each for notes: what happens, what is said, and how the camera moves. You sketch each shot in its frame — stick figures are fine — so everyone sees the film or ad before it is shot.

Which frame shape should I use?+

16:9 for YouTube, TV and most film; 9:16 for TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts; 1:1 for square social posts; 4:3 for classic film and a lot of animation. Use the shape the finished video will have, so your framing matches.

How many frames per page?+

Fewer, bigger frames (3 or 4) leave room for detail; more frames (6 to 9) fit a whole scene on one page. This maker offers 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 frames a page depending on the shape.

A4 or US Letter?+

A4 for most of the world, US Letter for the United States and Canada. The frames are laid out for each size, so they print with even margins either way.

Can I fill it in on a computer or tablet?+

Yes. Open the PDF in any PDF app that lets you draw or type — on an iPad with a pencil, or in a desktop PDF editor — or print it and draw by hand.

Is it free, and can I use it for client work?+

Yes on both. No sign-up and no watermark on your drawings; a small line at the foot of the page says where the template came from. Use it for school, personal or commercial projects.

Can AI draw the frames for me?+

Yes — StoryboardAI turns a script or an idea into a storyboard with the same faces in every shot, and gives you a link your client can approve shot by shot. It starts free with 50 credits and no card.
