Script timer: how long is your script?

Paste a script and see how long it runs read aloud — slow, normal and fast. Time only the voiceover and dialogue, check it against a 15, 30 or 60-second spot, and see how many words to cut or add.

Quick reference

How many words fit a 15, 30 or 60-second script?

Spoken words that fit each length, before any time for a logo or end card. Most commercial voiceovers are read at about 130 words a minute.

Time what is heard

Visual descriptions and camera notes take no time to read aloud. Count the voiceover and dialogue on their own to see the real length of the spot.

Leave room for the brand

A logo, an end card or a legal line usually takes 2–5 seconds. Add them as extra seconds so the words you keep still fit.

Read it out loud once

The timer gives a solid estimate; a real read adds pauses for breath and emphasis. If it is close to the limit, cut a line rather than speed up the read.

FAQ

Script length questions.

How many words is a 30-second ad?+

About 65 words at a normal voiceover pace of 130 words a minute — 50 if the read is slow and deliberate, 80 if it is brisk. Leave a few seconds for the logo or end card and the number drops: with a 3-second end card, about 58 words.

How many words is a 60-second script?+

About 130 words at a normal pace, between 100 and 160 depending on how fast it is read. A 15-second spot fits about 32, and 90 seconds about 195.

How does the script timer work out the time?+

It counts the words and divides by a reading speed: 100 words a minute for a slow read, 130 words a minute for a normal read, 160 words a minute for a fast read. Add extra seconds for a logo, an end card or pauses, and they are added to every time.

What does "Spoken lines only" count?+

Only what is said out loud: lines marked VO, V.O., Narrator or Dialogue, "NAME: line" dialogue, and the lines under a screenplay character name. Scene headings (INT./EXT.), visual descriptions, camera and sound notes, timestamps and parentheticals are skipped, because they are seen, not heard.

Is my script sent anywhere?+

No. The timer counts in your browser. The script only leaves the page if you choose "Turn this script into a storyboard", which opens the StoryboardAI Studio with it ready to upload.

Is the script timer free?+

Yes — no sign-up, no limit. Turning the script into a storyboard needs a free account, which comes with 50 credits and no credit card.
